Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, are the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the EU. The stakes are high, with an estimated 2.4 million potential productive life years lost in the EU in 2022 due to premature NCD mortality among the working-age population.
In response, countries have intensified multisectoral action, from taxation, regulatory, communication, and environmental policies. When it works, NCD prevention can ease the growth in health care costs while improving labour force participation and productivity.
