This year’s speaker is Kevin B. Johnson, MD, MS, David L. Cohen University Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Computer and Information Science, Pediatrics, and Science Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, Vice President of Applied Informatics for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and Director of the Artificial Intelligence for Ambulatory Care (AI4AI) Lab.

The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance.

Lecture Overview

The U.S. healthcare system continues to face significant challenges, including rising costs, variable quality, and an under-realized return on substantial investment. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence are rapidly reshaping industries and hold growing promise for healthcare.

This lecture will explore the Observer Project, an initiative designed to create an open resource that integrates data and contextual information to support research at the intersection of medicine, engineering, and health systems science. Dr. Johnson will discuss the development of this resource and share early findings from ongoing work.

This annual lecture honors the legacy and contributions of former NLM Director Donald A.BLindberg, MD, and former NLM Deputy Director for Research and Education Donald West King, MD—two leaders whose work helped define modern biomedical informatics and the role of information in advancing health and science.
